World Environment Day 2012

World Environment Day (WED) is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. This international event promotes an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues and enables empowerment of people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development. Each year WED is celebrated on the 5 June under a specific theme selected by UNEP. The theme of this year is: Green Economy: Does it include you? In practical terms, Green economy refers to growth in income and employment which is driven by public and private investments and aims to:

reduce carbon emissions and pollution
enhance energy and resource efficiency, and
prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Such investments need to be catalyzed and supported by targeted public expenditure, policy reforms and regulation changes. This theme therefore appeals to every citizen of a country for contributions or to initiate actions geared towards green economy.

The United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) defines the Green Economy as one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.

The Green Economy is a means of improving human livelihood while taking into consideration environmental impacts. It is the most viable way of tackling the problem at hand, not only for current but also future generations. A shift towards a Green Economy starts at an individual level to scaleup to the global level.
