United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (RIO+20 Conference)

20 – 22 JUNE 2012

This year marks a very important date on discussions on sustainable development with the Rio+20 Conference to be held in June 2012, as follow up of the debate, which started in 1992. Twenty years ago, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED or Earth Summit) took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to consider sustainable development as the new development paradigm.

During the conference, sustainable development was put high on political agendas, through the adoption of three important outcomes, namely: the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, Agenda 21 – Blueprint of action for sustainable development implementation and three UN Conventions on biodiversity (Convention on Biological Diversity), climate change (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) and desertification (Convention to Combat Desertification). Agenda 21 is an action plan aiming at addressing and rethinking economic development by reconciling the social and environmental dimensions.

The Rio+20 Conference will be an opportunity to review what has been achieved in the past two decades and to renew political commitment to sustainable development. The Conference will also have 2 themes: “a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication” and “the institutional framework for sustainable development“.
